Wilmerding, Allegheny County – December 4, 2018 – At 5:21am, fire units were dispatched to a possible structure fire located along the 200 block of 5th Street in Wilmerding. Crews quickly arrived on-scene with smoke showing from the Charlie side of a multi-family structure. An interior crew went inside to investigate and found a fire in an exhaust fan in one of the apartments with extension into the walls. Handlines were deployed and aerial devices from Monroeville and Turtle Creek were set up on the Alpha Side of the structure. The fire was quickly extinguished with no reported injuries. There were no smoke detectors in the kitchen where the fire started. A 13-year-old boy who was getting ready for school found smoke filling the apartment and alerted family members who quickly called 911. The American Red Cross was on-scene to assist those displaced by the fire.
