WARSAW, Ohio – On Sunday, June 22, 2008, the Walhonding Valley Fire District held training sessions in a home that had previously had a fire on the second floor a few months ago. The lead instructor for the training was Larry Cullison who is an instructor at the Ohio Fire Academy as well as a member of the W.V.F.D.
The morning training sessions consisted of practicing search and rescue techniques and other practice scenarios. These sessions were completed in the house as it was without any live fire. There were about four 4 men crews that participated in the exercises, and each crew was fortunate to have their own instructor.
The afternoon sessions were a little warmer, literally, because as the crews made their way through the house they found a live fire in the room to knock down. The crews had to make their way back out of the house, and then trade places with other teams, in order until all members of the crews, had an opportunity to advance the hose through the house to the fire.
After the W.V.F.D. members completed their training, members of the Three Rivers Fire District and the Jackson Township Fire Departments each were able to have one crew train in the home.
After the last crew completed its tasks, the fire was let go to spread through out the house until it had been burned to the ground. The fire crews maintained hand lines on all sides to protect any exposures. The day’s training was well organized, and safety was job one for all, and a very valuable experience was had by all of those who participated in the drills.
