PHILMONT, NY - Members of the Columbia County hazmat team, along with firefighters from Philmont and Mellenville, descended on the sleepy hamlet of Philmont on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at approximately 10:30 a.m. to handle a large fuel spill.
Philmont firefighters were dispatched to the Stewart’s Shop on Main Street for a reported fuel spill. The first arriving unit reported at least fifteen gallons of fuel had spilled and requested mutual aid from Mellenville.
A further size-up of the scene determined that some of the fuel had entered the municipal storm water system, thus leading command to request the county hazmat team to the scene.
With a heavy odor of gas hanging in the air, firefighters attempted to dilute the gas that entered the storm water system while Haz Mat crews took gas readings at various catch basins in the system.
Main Street was closed throughout the operations. Crews were back in service in approximately two hours.
