WARSAW, Ohio – On August 19, 2008, a passerby in an automobile, stopped at the Walhonding Valley Fire District station, and reported that a hillside just west of Warsaw on State Route 36 was on fire. Firefighters, who were on station at that time, went en route in Brush 708 to the scene at about 2:48 p.m. Also going en route was 704 with the gator in tow.
Firefighters arrived on scene quickly, due to the close proximity to the station, and found a power line down on the ground at the location of the fire. Firefighters made their way around the downed wire and up the hillside to a ridge about 30 feet off the highway. Firefighters used traditional grass fire tools to keep the fire from getting past them and further up the hill. Indian packs were deployed at the ridge and hand tools were used to keep the fire some what contained while waiting for the Power Company to come and disconnect the line. On scene were Engine 702 and Engine 703.
The power company arrived on scene and cut the downed power line in two and pulled each end of the wire away from the fire so that the firefighters could use hand lines to quickly put out the fire.
Seventeen firefighters were on hand to fight the grass fire and no one was hurt. Firefighters were on scene for about an hour and a half.
Also assisting at the scene was a crew from the Coshocton County EMS and members of Coshocton County R.E.A.C.T. for traffic control on the state highway.
