GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ - Early Tuesday morning, July 22, at 1:36 a.m., Gloucester City’s Task Force 5 consisting of companies from Mount Ephraim, Camden City and Westville were dispatched to 628 Powell Street between Sixth and Seventh Streets for a dwelling fire. Gloucester City Police advised Camden County Communications that they were on location with heavy smoke and fire showing from the rear of the dwelling.
Gloucester City’s Battalion 504, Bobbie Williams, arrived shortly after and confirmed heavy fire from a two story occupied twin duplex with occupants un-accounted for. Battalion 504 requested to place “All hands” in operation as the Camden County Communications Center re-toned the assignment for “A dwelling with report of people trapped” due to one occupant still missing.
Squad Company 51 arrived along with Quint 51 and placed multiple hand lines in service. Shortly after Engine 52 and Engine 54 arrived on location. Battalion 504 requested the second alarm shortly after due to heavy fire through-out the dwelling. Gloucester City Police had confirmed with the homeowners that all occupants were out of both dwellings and were all accounted for. A third alarm was eventually struck to bring in more man power to rotate the crews already on scene.
Units shared services from Audubon, Barrington, Bellmawr, Camden City, Collingswood, Mount Ephraim, Runnemede, and Westmont along with Gloucester County units from Westville and Deptford for man-power due to the extreme heat temperatures. Emergency Medical Services units from Camden City, Haddon Heights, Mount Ephraim, Pennsauken and Virtua Paramedics along with Camden County Canteen 2 and the Emergency Management Rehab Bus from Mount Ephraim assisted at the scene.
The fire was placed under control at 2:59 am by Battalion Chief Williams. Units were on location well into the late morning hours dousing hot spots and assisting with the fire investigation.
One firefighter was treated and released at Cooper University Hospital and one occupant of the residence was treated for smoke inhalation and a minor burn at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the Gloucester City and Camden County Fire Marshal’s Office.
