COSHOCTON, OH – At approximately 10:30 p.m., on Friday, August 21, 2009, a caller to the 911 Center reported that a spark from an electrical outlet had ignited a pillow which then ignited the couch and then their home. The 911 dispatchers put out the call to the Walhonding Valley Fire District (WVFD). They were dispatched to the Bethlehem Township Road 1202 to a structure fire. The dispatchers also reported that everyone was out of the home.
The WVFD placed en route Engine 701 and Engine 702. While they were responding, a WVFD member arrived on scene and reported light smoke coming from a mobile home, and then quickly changed his report to a fully engulfed structure. He also reported several structures had exposure issues.
A second alarm was requested and the Jackson Township FD and the Three Rivers Fire District were paged out as well.
WVFD Engine 701 arrived on scene quickly followed in by Engine 702. Hand lines were pulled, and an entry team prepared to make entry. The entry team found that the fire was mostly out, but found a small fire in the back of the mobile home. The fire had completely ravaged the entire home but then was extinguished, due to the lack of oxygen and due to the home windows and doors being shut.
Second alarm units arrive and helped with the overhaul operations to make sure there was no fire hidden in the walls. The fire was reported contained at 11:01 p.m., and firefighters remained on scene for another hour to mop up, and to investigate.
Assisting on scene was the Coshocton County EMS and Tom Dile from the Salvation Army with cold water, soft drinks, and snacks for the firefighters. The American Red was called in to assist the family.
