WARSAW, OH – On September 7, 2008, a Railroad Street resident had awoken to find that a nearby house was on fire. He called the Coshocton County 911 Center, and told them that the house had flames coming out the doors and windows, and that he believed that the house was vacant. At 5:00 a.m. the Walhonding Valley Fire District (WVFD) was paged out to the structure fire.
While fire units were going en route, WVFD Chief Mike Synder asked for a second alarm to be paged out. Responding to the second alarm were units from the Three Rivers Fire District and the Jackson Township Fire Department.
WVFD members arrived on scene to find the home fully engulfed. Firefighters got to work pulling hand lines, and once the lines were charged they got to work of knocking down the flames. As a safety precaution for the firefighters, it was determined that no one should enter the structure. Incoming units were also notified by radio of the “no entry” order. Going into a defensive mode, a 2 ½” line was put into operation to increase the volume of water onto the fire. The fire was soon knocked down and firefighters had a chance to get a closer look at the location of the hot spots.
The home was built using balloon framing technique which allowed the fire too many places to hide. This left the firefighters no choice but to do extensive overhaul by removing a large amount of exterior wood siding and the interior walls.
The fire was contained at about 6:17 a.m. and some overhaul continued to make sure all of the hot spots had been eliminated as well as applying foam to the interior. The house was a total loss and no one was injured during the fire fight. The fire remains under investigation.
Standing by at the scene was a crew from the Coshocton County EMS and providing rehab refreshments was Shirley Dile from the Salvation Army.
